Decorating Essentials- Lamps & Pillows!

I had a baby girl on January 16th and some awesome guest posters are filling in for me while I get some baby snuggle time!

Katie and I are friends in real life.  Haha, by real life I mean we did not meet online through blogging- we met when we both lived in Hawaii and now commiserate on how much we miss it.
She is so amazingly talented and I wish she could decorate my whole house.  She was recently featured on The Everygirl– be sure to check out her feature to see her beautiful apartment and read her inspirational story and check out her blog, Life With a Dash of Whimsy!  Thank you Katie!!
Hi everyone!  I’m Katie del Castillo from Life with a Dash of Whimsy.  I’m so happy to guest post for Laurel as she and her family welcome another beautiful little girl into the world.  I’m not nearly as crafty as Laurel, but I do love a well decorated and pretty space, so I hope you enjoy my tips!

Whether you notice it or not, each time you walk into someone’s home for the first time you immediately take inventory of your surroundings.  How is the furniture arranged?  Are the color choices pleasing to the eye?  Do I want to come back and spend more time here?  Imagine what people think when they walk into your home…is it inviting, warm and cozy?  The look and feel of a home has a direct impact on how it makes visitors (and you) feel.  A cluttered home can come across as unclean and overhead lighting can come across as harsh and unwelcoming.  On the positive side, a clean and well decorated home with good ambient lighting makes a person feel at home and at ease, and will most likely make them enjoy their visit and want to come back!  So if you are trying to scare off your in-laws or some pesky neighbors, read no further, but if you want to make your house more of a home, here are some of my favorite common sense ways to make a living room a nice and cozy place (for your guests AND for yourself)!

Essential #1–  Lamps!  Lamps are the BEST way to create a nice mood in any room, plus they are pretty and are a great way to add a pop of color.  Overhead lights are a no-no in my home, and I encourage you to do the same in yours.  Here are some of my favorite lamps from across the web, although TJ Maxx and Homegoods typically have great options as well, and are a great bargain!

7 lamps that will add some charm to any home!
1. simple teal lamp 2. snazzy cobalt gourd lamp (set of 2) 3. fun gold lamp 4. gold honeycomb lamp 5. white gourd lamp (same as #2 but cheaper!) 6. chevron lamp (so cool!) 7. gold tripod lamp

Essential #2– Pillows!  I am a sucker for pretty pillows.  They can add fun color, texture and pattern, and also enable you to take a more comfortable nap!  A chair or sofa without pillows looks naked, so if you don’t have any pillows go get some!  There are lots of adorable and cheap ones on Etsy, or you could go the pricier route and snag some of the darling pillows from Caitlin Wilson textiles (how can you resist the fun prints?).  CB2 has some really cute ones right now too, so the options are endless!

Pillows to add some pizazz to your sofa.

Tomorrow, Katie will show us THREE more essentials- Candles, Throws, Books & Magazines!
