I have said it before that despite styling cocktails, I actually do not drink many cocktails, I usually drink wine. However, there is a major exception to that statement and it is mezcal. If we go to dinner and there is a cocktail with mezcal in it, I order it. I love mezcal. Mezcal is NOT tequila, as it is so often mixed up with. It has a delicious smoky flavor and I just love it. Anyhoo, as someone who makes and styles cocktails for a living, I had a DUH moment when I realized I have never tried to make a mezcal cocktail at home. So, here is the first of perhaps many mezcal cocktails for A Bubbly Life.
4 ounce Orange Juice- (I use freshly squeezed because we have an abundance of oranges in Arizona and our backyard)
1 ounce Mezcal
2-3 dashes of Orange Bitters
Drizzle of Jalapeño Oil (the more you add the spicier it will be)
Per my usual with cocktail recipes, there is no additional sweetness to the drink like simple syrup, I enjoy the smokiness of the cocktail and the freshly squeezed orange juice, I added orange bitters to help add a bit more sweetness. Although I absolutely love mezcal, I think the smokiness is a very particular flavor and you either like it (or in my case love it) or you dont. Check mezcal out though- it is so different than most alcohols I think!
